Getreadywithmemamma baubles and what’s it’s galore. When I was a little girl, I watched Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” 64 times. Well, more than that, but my family got to that number and then decided that this was just going that direction, so they just watched the rest unfold. I was smitten with the story. There was a rock in our backyard that the neighbors one time drove down the street with their windows rolled down and could hear me belting out her rock solo, as I posed on the rock near our pond. I fought with my neighbor over who got to play Ariel when we played. When I closed my eyes at night, I was “The a Little Mermaid”. We tell ourselves stories to help us to deal with life. Sometimes, that means imaginative play as children. Sometimes, it means lists of intentions as adults that we make for ourselves for the next year. As, I took out our ornaments this year, and yes we got our tree early, but are trying a let’s decorate the tree closer to actual Christmas this year thing, I paused when I came across this bauble from last year. You see, last year we had had our ultrasounds of Natalie by the time Christmas came and this ornament was my scavenger hunt for Brad’s parents to hear the good news of our pregnancy. We had been there before, the year before. I had pulled a “bun” out of the oven when we were pregnant with Lucy Grace. A full year later, we had lost Lucy in pregnancy and grieved her and continued to grieve her. We had walked through the cloud that is pregnancy loss and healed together. We were pregnant again and while brimming with gratefulness of the good news. We were tiptoeing gently around it knowing the fragility of pregnancy now more than ever. I remember now when I hold my six month old miracle baby and kiss her cheeks what stories I told myself as I cradled her gently in my womb a year ago. I told myself that Mary would understand what it was like to marvel at a creation inside of you. I have not even a scratch of a clue as to what it would be like to be carrying God. However, I can say that having known loss and love all in one breath on earth, that I now know what it is like to feel Heaven coming close. I am grateful.
